These treatments have as target the improvement of specific mechanical properties and/or characteristics in surface areas, subject to relevant, and generally localized, stress: laser may be an alternative to many traditional thermal treatments and, in the same time, a technology suitable to a variety of applications, ranging from mass production to laboratory applicative research. Any kind of source may be used, according to the final aim of the application.

localized thermal input
selectivity of application
limited distortion
treatment of complex geometry components and difficult zones by
means of specific optics
high cooling rate
high process speed
no structural change in the non treated zone
no external quenching
very low emission of polluting substances
final machining operations not necessary.
The superface treatments field, yet presented
on the laser industrial systems market, remains a niche sector with
not completely exhausted potentialities and partially unexplored areas.
Generally, besides the not slight investment costs, the industrial spread
seems conditioned from the reinforced projects criteria and from the
traditional manufacturing modalities, in spite of the undeniable advantages
in terms of productivity and quality.
The continue developments in the laser sources have opened new horizons
and in part revolutionized the laser prospects obviating to unacceptable
problems in the industrial field as for example the need to use coating
in the case of CO2 sources use.
